Can Keloids be removed by laser treatment? – Dr. Rajdeep Mysore

Whenever a patient has an injury that leads to a cut in the skin completely, it leads to the formation of something called as a scar. A scar that overgrows from its boundaries is called as a keloid. So keloid looks like an abnormal protrusion from outside the injury on the skin. Sometimes keloids can appear in apparently normal skin, even in areas of skin that don’t seem to be injured, but there is likely to have them process that has caused injury to the skin like skin disease or pimples that have caused damage to the skin and formation of keloids. So keloids can be treated in multiple ways, the simplest is the injection to the keloids and more advanced techniques like electron beam therapy, which is the latest treatment for keloids. Keloids removal with laser is one the methods to surgically remove it, but any surgical method if not followed with electron beam therapy has a very high recurrence rate. So more than 90% of the patients who undergo surgery either through steel blade surgery or laser surgery have recurrence if they don’t undergo electron beam therapy immediately after they undergo keloid.
