The breast unit is maned with specialist surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and oncologists dealing only with diseases of the breast.

The doctors of the unit are subjected to annual revalidation of their practice by the UK’s General Medical Council. This is the first revalidation program for medical practitioners in the European Union.
This ensures the maintenance of their competence and monitors their complication rate and case load.

The surgeons are obliged to treat more than 30 new cancers annually each of them. The breast oncologists are due to dedicate half of their chemotherapy treatment to breast chemotherapy, the breast unit must have more than 150 new cancers per year and so on.

In addition all the patients are obliged to have pure operative diagnosis with percutaneous biopsy, all the mastectomy patients to be offered immediate breast reconstruction and many other prerequisites that a certified breast unit should have.
