Breast cancer now occurs in 1 in 9 women (lifetime risk = 11%). At present only 5-10% of breast cancers can be explained by an inherited mutation in one of the known breast/ovarian cancer genes, known as BRCA1 and BRCA2. Families with 3 or more relatives with breast cancer can be accounted for by mutations in one of these genes and it is now possible to test for mutations in both genes using a simple blood test. Women who are found to have one of the BRCA genes may consider more intense breast screening or even risk reducing surgery (prophylactic mastectomy).
