Food Truck and Beer Pavilion at VRCCO

The Veterinary Referral Center of Central Oregon (VRCCO) is breaking from the traditional expectations of a referral or emergency veterinary center by doing something surprisingly obvious. Named in memory of VRCCO’s four-legged Chief Morale Officer, Ponch’s Place will serve as a gathering place for the people of Bend to enjoy food, drinks, and help VRCCO continue to make connections within the community. An expert at making lasting bonds and bringing a smile to people’s faces, dedicating this space to Ponch’s memory made perfect sense. Ponch’s Place will have room to house four food trucks as well as a beer pavilion.

Located in Bend, Oregon, VRCCO is quietly establishing itself as one of the nation’s top centers for advanced pet care. Operations manager Michael Fifer states, “Our vision is to build a world-class organization. We understand that nobody wants to see the vet, particularly when it comes to complex cases and emergencies that can be emotionally draining and time-consuming. For that reason, we have always challenged ourselves to deliver a positive journey regardless of the circumstance or outcome.” This is why VRCCO came up with the idea for Ponch’s Place to complement the new state-of-the-art veterinary facility currently under construction.

With as much as we all have going on, it feels great that there is still an organization out there looking to ease the stress associated with a sick or injured pet. It will be exciting to see what other surprises VRCCO has in store for its pet parents, and as they like to call them, “patient-guests”.

The Veterinary Referral Center of Central Oregon was originally founded in 2018. They see patients with advanced or emergency medical conditions from the entire Pacific Northwest. VRCCO is the only 24/7 emergency veterinary facility in Central Oregon in addition to having board-certified doctors in Dermatology, Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, Surgery, and Ophthalmology.

VRCCO is currently searching for the best food trucks to be part of Ponch’s Place. For more information, please contact David Schmidt via email at [email protected].

Hair Transplant in Turkey

The BBC has filmed a documentary about Turkey’s medical tourism and hair transplantation, going to Turkey for the first time to document a first-hand experience. The team accompanied Paul Readman (26) on his transformative journey to restoring hair with low-priced surgery at Istanbul-based Smile Hair Clinic.

Dealing with the effects of hair loss

BBC reporter Tiffany Sweeney visited Paul in Middlesbrough, his hometown in North Yorkshire, England, one week before his hair restoration treatment. Talking with him, his parents, and friends, she learned about the effects of hair loss on Paul’s social life and the reasons for getting a hair transplant in Turkey.

Paul chose hair transplantation because his receding hairline had significantly impacted his confidence. He had been saving up for six months to pay for the £2,000 procedure at Smile Hair Clinic, which would have cost him four times more if he had gone to a UK clinic.

Meeting with Dr. Mehmet Erdoğan and Dr. Gökay Bilgin at Smile Hair Clinic

Upon arrival in Istanbul, the BBC team accompanied Paul to Smile Hair Clinic, where he met with Dr. Mehmet Erdoğan and Dr. Gökay Bilgin for a consultation and hair analysis. The surgeons inspected his hair, designed a new hairline, and shaved his head to prepare him for the surgery.

The six-hour operation started by injecting local anesthesia with a needle-free gun. The surgeons then extracted 2,700 hair follicles from the back of Paul’s head, where his hair was the thickest. The last stage of the procedure involved reinserting the harvested hair grafts into Paul’s hairline before placing bandages and seeing him off.

Paul said the surgery was quick and nearly painless. The only pain resulted from some injections of the local anesthetic.

Transformation stages and Paul’s experience

A month after Paul’s hair transplant procedure, the BBC team returned to Middlesbrough to check up on him, see how his hair was growing, and learn about his family’s take on his new look.

One month after the surgery is the worst time for hair transplant patients because they experience the so-called shock loss.

Paul was no exception. His hair entered the shedding phase about two weeks after the surgery, with the donor areas having patches due to the trauma of the procedure. However, the first results came four months after the treatment.

In a video sent in later, Paul shared his experience, showcasing considerable hair growth that surpassed his expectations and boosted his confidence. Saying that choosing Smile Hair Clinic was the best decision, he said he was happy with the result and excited to see how his appearance would change over the following months.

Whittier Program Closes the Life Expectancy Gap in Minority and Low-Income Communities

Whittier Program Closes the Life Expectancy Gap in Minority and Low-Income Communities

Whittier Program Closes the Life Expectancy Gap in Minority and Low-Income CommunitiesWhittier Program Closes the Life Expectancy Gap in Minority and Low-Income Communities

In 2011, Whittier Street Health Center raised awareness about the 33-year gap in life expectancy for those living in Roxbury (59.5 years) compared to those living in the Back Bay (92 years), a gentrified neighborhood less than 2 miles from Roxbury. Whittier focused on the “Tale of the Two Cities” and partnered with its patients, community residents and leaders, corporations and public sector partners to raise awareness and to develop programs to close the life expectancy gap. Whittier launched its Boston Health Equity Program in 2012, a system of care for people with chronic illnesses and those at risk that fully integrates innovative community outreach, linkage to social services, wellness support and care coordination with a focus on eliminating health disparities and their associated costs.

A little over a decade later, working with its patients and partners, Whittier has made large strides in improving life expectancy in its service areas by 10 years. The Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) released a report on May 11, 2023, and there is a 23-year life expectancy gap between residents in Roxbury and the Back Bay.

On June 21, 2023, Whittier Street Health Center co-hosted a session in partnership with the Boston Public Health Commission and the CHNA-CHIP Collaborative.

The open discussion, led by the Commissioner of the City of Boston’s Health Department Dr. Bisola Ojikutu and Whittier’s President & CEO Frederica M. Williams, addressed the need for continued and expanded community outreach and education to provide the necessary and comprehensive range of treatment and prevention services to low-income minority and immigrant populations.

Community members attending the event were connected to health resources offered by the City of Boston, including the Boston Health Start Initiative (BHSI), which provides direct support to pregnant and parenting women, children, and families of color. Whittier Street Health Center is a designated BHSI site.

“The recent Health of Boston reports shows that the life expectancy gap of Roxbury residents has shown a slight improvement, but there remains a gap of 23 years when compared to the residents in Back Bay,” said Frederica M. Williams, president and CEO of Whittier Street Health Center. “We need to continue our efforts to address the barriers to good health, such as housing, food and economic insecurity while empowering our residents to engage in lifestyle changes and behaviors that will improve their health and quality of life. Having access to prevention, screening and treatment in addition to community investments in the social determinants of health can lead to better health outcomes. We are grateful to all who have supported our Boston Health Equity Program, which was launched in 2012, and look forward to expanding our health equity partnerships so we can continue to close the 23-year life expectancy gap.”
